Hollyhock Tiling

A Design for Tiling into a Victorian Hallway

Our client had a preference for hexagonal mosaic tiling into a grand front hallway of their 1864 house as part of a wider extension, refurbishment and landscape design.

The staggered geometry of the hallway was not suiting the more rigid grid of traditional hexagonal tiling

Inspired by a recent visit to Île de Ré, and the wonderful ‘Hollyhock Tile’ by Patrick Kruithof, we developed a hollyhock motif into the tiling format to enable the pattern to turn the corner.

A leaf and petal motif were developed, that could each conform to the different proportions of the areas, and solve the pattern at the overlap where they meet with a merged leaf/petal motif.
